7:35 pm, Wednesday the 13th June, 2011
Santhosh walks into his house after a hard day’s work, with plans for a quiet evening at home, “I'll watch some Youtube” he says to himself, “maybe I’ll have a chat with friends on gchat, browse through random profiles on facebook etc, but first I should check out this new Google + thing, maybe I’ll upload my engagement photos”, he dreams. So with a hope in his heart and a song in his head, he walks into his room.
“Woe is me!!!” he screams, his dreams crushed, and his ‘quiet evening plans’ shattered. He walks in, only to find his internet dead again, for the 654th time, but “worry not” he thinks to himself, “for it is just a ‘locked port’ and a call to the trusty ‘Complaints Department’ of ‘Airtel’s Broadband and Fixed Line’(dial 198 from your Airtel Fixed Line) will resolve this disaster that was afoot.”
So piously, with great respect and love for this service that he has been using for the past decade, he decides to call ‘The Complaints Department – Airtel Broadband and Fixed Line’ like the 653 times before.
With the receiver in his left hand, he dials… 1, 9 and 8, a moment of silence and then there you hear it, that familiar tune, the new Airtel anthem, a funky tune with lyrics that don’t make sense and a weirdly repetitive humming for a chorus, that makes him think ‘this has got to be the worst jingle ever’. He listens closely as a voice starts speaking those familiar words, words that would guide him to victory, to freedom, to internet bliss.
“Welcome to the Exciting New World of Airtel” she says, the lady with a pleasant voice, surely they have made an effort in selecting this woman, a voice as sweet as honey. “Get closer to what you love with Airtel Broadband and Fixed Line” she says…. Ah ha, victory is near, the Airtel lady has spoken. “You have reached 1 9 8 complaints helpline, for information related to Airtel Broadband and Fixed Line, please dial 1 2 1 from your Airtel fixed line”, “hold on” he thinks “are they asking me to call 1 2 1 or, oh wait, it’s just a cleverly placed and cunningly worded informative statement that’s meant to divert my train of thought”, “I don’t require information, I just need to make a complaint regarding a ‘locked port’” and so, he continued to listen.
And then it started, the main course, “for English press 1”, “Hindi ke liye dho dabayae”, “Tamilikku moondrai azhuthavum”, since Tamil is his Mother Tongue, he decides to press 1 for English, why? Cause now he wants to sound cool, just like the Airtel lady.
Upon pressing 1, he hears the lady address him again “To continue with the same fixed line number, press 1”, “to enter a new fixed line number, press 2”, pressing 2, he is taken to the next part of this adventure that he so loves, “hope there are more twists in the plot”, he pray’s.
And yes, just as he had hoped, more options to choose from, “for information related to your fixed line service, press 1”, “for information related to your internet and broadband related services, press 2”, “to repeat, press zero” the Airtel Lady spoke again. “Now to take control of my life and its destiny” he thought to himself, “and to solve the mystery of the broadband and its locked port”, he presses 2.
“To serve you better…blah, blah, blah…upgrading our systems… blah, blah, blah... won’t be able to... blah, blah… sorry for the inconvenience”. “Gnooooooooooo!!!” he screams, since the lady has distracted him with a random statement about Airtel serving him better, by providing rubbish service etc, “well at least she’s honest and apologetic about it” he thought. By now the rage had been built up, “at least now they will put me on to a person with whom I can speak to, regarding my lousy locked port”
But alas, all that was heard was another “Gnooooooooooo!!!” for another menu of choices had to be selected, more options and more hurdles. Feeling the slightest bit of temper creeping in, he listens carefully, for the end might be near.
She spoke, with her voice like a siren’s song. You cannot resist but to hear, as she throws out option after option after option for you to choose from, “for complaints and requests related to billing and payments, press 1”, “for technical complaints and request, press 2”, “to know more about the best offer for you, press 3”, “to know the status of the service request and profile management, press 4”, “for any other complaints and request, press 5”, “to repeat, press zero”, “to go back to the previous menu, press 7”, “to go back to the main menu, press 8”, what?, who?, where?, when?, confused and tired, he wonders ‘would option 2 be the answer to all my problems, is there really a light at the end of that tunnel, did we really land on the moon… hold on, I need to press something’. 2 it is.
On pressing 2, he heard the nastiest thing anyone has ever said to him, in the history of his existence, the vile words struck sharply at him, “for broadband not working, press 1”, “For browsing related concerns, press 2”, “For any other broadband related complaints, press 3”, “To repeat, press 0”, “To go back to the previous menu, press 7”, “To go back to the main menu, press 8”, “To speak to our customer service representative, press 9”.
Wait a minute; he thought “what was that at the end? Could it be true? A Customer Service Representative? Could it be the answer to all of life’s problems? Oh Internet, here I come!”
“Nine I tell you, Nine! Nine! Nine! Waaaahahhahaha…. Oh you beautiful Nine, how, I longed for you?” and so he rejoiced for the end seemed near.
Now the lady wouldn’t just transfer his call, oh no she won’t, she needed to make sure she knew what he’s doing, she needs to reassure him, by saying “Please stay online while we transfer your call to the customer service representative”, “I know, I know, come on, faster, were almost there” the thoughts barely out of his mouth, when she said “This call maybe recorded for our internal quality purpose”. ”Quality!” he thought “what quality? I have been waiting here, for what seems like an eternity, going through various options, different loop holes and other ridiculous obstacles to get to this final moment of victory”.
Now where’s the Customer Service Representative? It’s ringing, and the ring turns into that ghastly music again. This jingle on a constant loop feels like a cotton ear bud is being replaced by a blunt, rusty shovel that is digging at my very soul, least of all my damned ears.
Music…
Music…
Music…
Music…
There she was again, “please stay on the line, our customer service representative will be with you shortly” and I thought to myself, “She hasn’t let me down all this while, every time I chose an option that she gave me, she delivered and I was one step closer to Nirvana”.
Music…
Music…
Music…
Engaged Tone……………. … … … … . . . .
“Gnoooooooooooo!, Oh lord, if you are up there? Take me now!!” screamed Santhosh over the thought of going through this whole fiasco all over again. But unfortunately for him, he had to do it a few times over.
The Verdict is? Well let’s just say that in life…
Music…
Music…
Music…
A decade gone by… In the blink of an eye, we have entered into the year 2011, “The Future” is here. I had big dreams for this future, flying cars, space stations, jet packs and cure for all diseases, and most of it came true, and to the ones that didn’t, well, I can wait.
The most memorable ten years. Between the period 2000 and 2010, I have witnessed and experienced some of the greatest events in my life. Love lost and better yet, found. Relationships built to last time, and others broken. Dear ones lost, and new entrants brought into being. I grew personally, both to be a better person (left to judgment) and to be a larger person (fact).
People have done nothing more than to amaze me these past ten years, the hurdles we as humans have crossed, the love that we have shown, the sheer strength of the human heart and mind is baffling. I know what you are thinking, this joker is mad! It is true that we have become more destructive in the past ten years than any other time in history, we destroy each other and the very world that sustains us, but then again, we are human after all. We do, because we are.
To be reminiscing? Absolutely, think of the events, the people and the choices that have changed our lives, for the better or worse, they all made a difference.
Now like most people initially I joined Hi 5 and then slowly migrated with great difficulty to Orkut, and then a friend comes and tells me to join Facebook, at this point of time there were some five different social networks and the constant debate as to which was better and which was safer, unfortunately all the sites were complicated to use and if you were concerned about safety, the best option is to not sign up. But then again we as mammals, in nature are a very curious bunch. We will go through your profile and pictures if we stumble upon it, and most of the time we stumble because we are looking around for something to stumble upon.
But now facebook has become boring, same old status messages, same old pictures, all of it, same old, same old. I need a new source of entertainment.... and oh yes... the verdict is, To be facebooking, cause it gives us slobs something to do, and in this day and age where everyone is too busy and important to keep in touch with our loved ones, a group message is just marvellous.
I have nothing to write about.
I would have stopped with that sentence and received the world record for shortest most insignificant but grammatically correct blog, but then again I could not resist. “Ramble on”, says the voice inside my head. “Write some nonsense that everybody would read but nobody would want to” and it’s at this point of time that I, Santhosh Sundaram, for the first time in my life have gotten bored of my inner voice (mind you, that’s never happened before). So I decided to quit blogging and go Facebooking (is there a “ing” after that?).... Aahh Yes, Facebook.
The Language:
Now the language spoken in this town is its own, the diction is a mix of various eastern and western languages and yes, we have our own words that have absolutely no definition in any dictionary, mind you, our English would baffle the folks at Oxford and Cambridge. The Tamil (our mother tongue) here is so foul and just plain wrong, the scholars and literaries of days gone by would probably be rolling in their graves. Not only did we invent a list of words for ourselves, but we took the originals and spiced it up a bit. The Tamil we speak is unbelievably funny, for eg, “andha bugger enna overa torture pannaran”, now you might think that half the words are in English (bugger, over and torture) but the truth is, that was purely a Tamil statement. Everyone is multilingual in Madras, a regular Tamil sentence such as “indha galeej seriyana lavada madhiri behave pannaran, sensea illa” contains Kannada, Hindi, English and Tamil ancestry. This makes Madras a place easily inhabitable by people of all nationalities and cultures, truly a city that encourages diversity.
The English we speak, that’s right, we speak English, not just any English, the Queens English, even the Brits realising our flair for the language set up their First Indian Fort in Madras, they truly understood our potential. We took the language from them and made it ours, words like Peter, Root, Without and Line, etc don’t really mean what they should, for example “root” and “line” are both ways of describing one person flirting with or hitting on someone else, “Without” means someone who hasn’t bought a ticket for their use of public transportation, so on and so forth, the list forever changing. We do our share of altering the English words too, “Country” means an illiterate village fool, “Doop” is actually duped, “Wines” means a liquor shop and not the liquor itself, “Cutting” can mean both a haircut or a large round at the Wines and the word “Tight” means someone who is really drunk and also its actual meaning of tightness.
The Food:
Food is not just a necessity in Madras, it’s a passion, it’s a lifestyle choice, it is a vital part of our culture. Not only is the food here unbelievably good, it’s cheap. The restaurateurs in Madras understand one thing, people here love to eat and food of all things should be cheap. The people here aren’t bothered by change either, we love to experiment, for a town with a majority of vegetarians (or supposedly vegetarians), we have a wide variety of cuisines, from Various Indian to Chinese, to Italian, French, American, Japanese, Thai, Korean, I can keep going on. The availability of all kinds of meat, poultry and greens and fresh sea food makes it easy for anyone to survive here. But it’s the traditional south Indian cuisine that gets you to fall flat on your face.
The Dosas, Pongal and Idlys along with the Chutneys is simply orgasmic, and the Sambar, my good lord the Sambar, it’s gravy from the Gods. Breakfast alone has over a 100 different items on the menu, Heaven. We do eat the occasional English breakfast, bread and butter with a helping of bacon and sausages, an egg and end it with a cup of tea.
Lunch is a whole new ball game, “the meals” (that’s Tamil again by the way) is an unlimited supply of Rice with various accompaniments, it is a three course meal that starts with the rice and a mix of Sambar, yes the Sambar again, every true resident of Madras loves his/ her Sambar, then the second course is with Rasam, or Pepper Water as it is known in our Queens English is an extremely tasty and spicy mix that acts as a digene and flu medicine, it will kill a cold, fever and any throat related ailments in a matter of minutes. The final round of the meal is rice with a mix of Yogurt or Butter Milk, this usually calms the burning that is felt after the Sambar and the Rasam rounds and acts as an extremely effective aesthetic. We Tamil’s specifically designed our afternoon meal in such a manner that it aids in the post lunch nap, and yes, we all take a nap after lunch.
Dinner is usually a variety of things; it ranges from the usual Rice to Chapathis and Parotas (Borota) to even the Dosas and many other things, the Curd (Yogurt) is usually had in one form or the other and again that’s as a sleep aid. Don’t fret thinking “why is dinner so lousy, after a day of food par excellence?” Dinner is when the meat shows up, Chicken being the most favourite (Chicken 65, Kurma and Chilly the most popular types), some fools consider egg as vegetarian and others fish, isn’t it wonderful how we bend the laws of nature according to our whims and fancies.
Beverage consumption in Madras should be a whole new blog. Coffee is probably Madras’ biggest passion; we have evolved and developed a new highly heat resistant tongue and internal organs, I have not seen boiling hot coffee being drunk so casually before and at such pace. The entire population of Madras don’t really drink coffee, they shoot it. A glass of piping hot coffee (approx 200 ml) will go down in 5 seconds flat, no heartburn whatsoever.
We also drink tea in massive amounts, but as an evening beverage, something we picked up from our English ancestors. Not just any tea like you other slobs, we drink only “special tea” (Tamil once more). We have a variety of them too, tea with a mix of various ingredients such as, Ginger and Cardamom (Elaichi or Ealaka) are the most popular. Apart from tea, we drink a lot of juices, lime, tender coconut, orange, watermelon, mango and the most popular Sathukudi Juice (Sweet Lime), it’s our speciality.
Cinema, Cricket and the Beach, these are the three things that we do on a regular basis to keep ourselves entertained throughout the year, but that’s not all we do, there’s more, there are special activities that pop up for each season, during the Pongal season we actually partake in the eating of sugarcane very religiously. Then we have the summer where doing anything outdoors is a suicidal venture, but we still enjoy the sweet Dharboose (Watermelon) and the sun burn at the beach, during this time we also celebrate Holi and Easter, there is a 15 to 20 day stretch at the end of April and beginning of May called the “Kathiri” (also means Brinjal), this is the heights of summer when the heat is turned up to maximum along with the humidity.
There is a season for flying kites and a season for dance, there’s a season where all the concerts happen and another one for theatre, we even have a shopping festival that lasts a whole month, all around you there’s a play or a dance or whatever it is that people do during the respective periods, the bottom line is that there is enough to keep you entertained through the year. In a few days we are going to be cheering the Chennai Super Kings (the greatest cricket team on Earth) on for the IPL season, but Chennai is not the fanatic city, we cheer on both our team and the opponents, we don’t care who plays as long as the game is good we cheer them on, that’s the kind of people you find here, sometimes it’s stupid, we lose a crucial wicket and everybody’s cheering the bowler on for delivering a spectacular ball, good sportsmanship but then again.
The Beach is the place to be if you have nothing to do or no friends or no money, hence the reason our beaches are always crowded. We have over 10 beaches in Madras, 3 major and many smaller ones, our Marina is the world’s second largest beach and probably the world’s largest “lovers park”, there are couples there from seven in the morning till one in the night, its remarkable, these couples are so in love that they can withstand the forces of nature, hot sun, insane humidity, pouring rain, loss of jobs, financial crisis, inflation... no worries, the love will go on.
Cinema is a whole topic by itself when it comes to the folks from Madras, we don’t just watch movies, we try to base our lives around it, we sing and dance the songs, we dress like the stars, we even worship some of them, Rajinikanth is not a hero who saves the world, He is the World. Ajith and Vijay (Thala!!) have some of the biggest fan clubs on the planet though they churn out horrible, box-office failures, this is because they have something that Al Pacino and Anthony Hopkins will never have, “Mass” (meaning mass appeal, also a Tamil word). Mass is what makes the Kaas (Money) when the actors don’t know how to act. With one of the largest film industries in the world, we produce and watch hundred’s of movies a year. Since the passion for movies is so great we automatically have some awesome theatres in Madras, Sathyam with its clarity and comfort, Devi with its size and Woodlands with its trash, these are some of the most crowded spots in Madras, even roads had to be changed to accommodate the thousands of movie goers.
7.5 million people in a large cramped tropical city with no winters, massive beaches, perennial sunshine, good food and pretty women, sounds like some beach paradise yes? From the above description you are probably thinking of a place like Miami, but the truth is far from it. It almost seems like the God’s (we have an estimated 3.3 million Gods) were playing an insane prank on us. They drop us in the most fertile place on Earth and forget very often to provide us with rains, Madras’ Marina is one of the largest beaches in the world, but the water too dangerous for a swim, some three small rivers that’s too dirty for life, Heat that makes you wish you were dead, the best traffic cops in the country that is, till the end of the month when they decide to bankrupt you, Bus drivers who are maniacs and Auto drivers who are the biggest embezzlers you’ll ever meet. Our politics and politicians are far from good but they seem to know when to behave themselves and when to go crazy.
But we don’t let such trivial things bother us. We are some busy people here. We are the first to rise in India, at around 4.00 am the tea shops are open and by 5.00 it’s packed with customers and it’s not just the tea shops, six in the morning is the best time to buy meat and go for a haircut, the vegetable market opens at six along with the Wine Shops (Wines) and both remain crowded for the entire day (Bangalore wakes up around lunch time) so on and so forth. Night life is quiet peaceful, you have your parties and pub’s, dinners and coffee shops and restaurants and Kaiyendhi Bhavans (a fancy, multi-cuisine, fast food outlet sort of thing).
Madras is a highly fashionable town, our trends change, not seasonally (we have 3 seasons, hot, hotter and humid) but on a daily basis, highly flexible aren’t we, that’s right our Hawaii Cheppals provide extreme flexibility whereas our Lungis provide absolute ventilation and the Baniyan is an all purpose and optional vest, all together a complete man. The Women, not just pretty but smart women, diverse in both personality and looks, they with their sensual Salwars and sexy Sarees seem to be getting only better, the choices are limitless.
Living it up in Chennai requires a certain amount of patience, a sense of humour, love for the simpler things in life and a hint of charm, if you do not posses these qualities, no problem, we really don’t care. We have a place for everyone and anyone is welcome, we are not racist but will probably rip you off since you are an outsider and may not know the ways. Bottom line, it’s a definite YES, life doesn’t get better than this, anyone who has ever been here will agree, you can get them out of Chennai but you can never take “Chennai” out of them, cause once you go that quirky, there’s no going back...
Today the district of Chennai houses one of the largest industrial and IT exporting units in the country, if you want to set up a plant to build cars and bikes or any other transportation device, look no further. From railway coaches to military tanks, from trucks to the tyres they use, from Hyundai’s to Enfield’s, it’s all here, we house over 30 percent of the country’s automobile industry, but that’s not what I’m here to talk about, I’m here to talk about the life and the lifestyle in Chennai.
Anybody that has had their fun in Madras (from now on I’ll refer to Chennai as Madras [which is it’s old name] for my convenience) will swear by it, “This, is the place to live”, I know people from all parts of the world who have come and settled down here and they love it, but why? We are not as important as Delhi or as financially successful as Bombay or even a party town like Bangalore, so why do people like this place? That’s what we are here to find out.
The biggest contributing factor to the brilliance of this city is its little quirks. Madras is one of the most idiosyncratic towns on this side of the world. The people, I must say, I have yet to see a more fun loving, peaceful and friendly bunch who are equally crazy and corrupt. Yes, like any society anywhere we have our antisocial elements but even they have a great sense of humour, which makes the process of even getting stabbed in the back that much more fun, for example a bribe paid would be followed by a sarcastic joke (Nakkal) and an assault would be followed by a “punch dialogue”, these are some of the rare phenomena that entertain this city.
The people here have an extreme sense of humour about things, especially the present generation with its Radio Mirchi lifestyle and comic relief. We are equally curious, an accident, a movie shooting, a famous personality is all it takes; we immediately form a perfect circle around it/ them and watch in awe, we stop dead on our tracks if theres a crowd gathering.
The biggest and most distinctive quirk that we have that you may not find anywhere else, is the way we mourn for the dead. We carry them in a procession of flowers up to the graveyard or the crematorium, celebrating their demise with fireworks, extreme levels of alcohol, a dance that will make Michael Jackson look like a chump and with beats so fast and rhythmic even a cheetah wouldn’t be able to keep up to it. We call it the Dead Body Dance; I am not making this up. Nowhere else on this planet or even in this universe is this ritual practiced or even considered sane. And even if it is, that means there is some Madras dude around the corner, it’s in our blood.
To be Continued.....
Webster defines the verb, “to Lech” as follows – Lust. It’s that simple, Webster also defines the term “lecher” as follows, “a MAN who engages in lechery” are they trying to imply that only men lech? Ask my good friend Mr. Nikhil Kurian what the definition of a lecher is and he will point to one Mr. Thejas Krishna and vice versa, though this may be true in many cases, I am still not convinced. I agree some men are lechers; most of the buggers I know do it for a living, but I’m sure Women also lech about things, their mind might not be as one tracked as Kurian’s or Krishna’s but there has to be things they lust after, it’s in our nature as humans to do so.
So on my quest to discover the workings of the female psyche, I interviewed a few women, and most were silent and a few got violent, one Ms. Aparna Ramchandar seemed to be the most elusive, clearly she looked like the lecherous kind, but wouldn’t budge. Luck came to me when I spoke to one Sharon Sigamani, she was quiet proud of the fact that she was and is a lecher, handsome men and often hot women seem to interest her, fascinating. So there, there is proof of lecherous women. Webster needs to correct itself.
But is lusting after something a bad thing? I don’t know, on one hand seems desperate but on the other seems to be a path to greater glory, to achieve or to have something more fascinating that what is. But, to hell with that as I’m not in the mood to get into philosophical or theological discussions.
But realistically speaking, it is frowned upon..... So now for the verdict..... Lech on, I say.... It’s good fun.... you hurt nobody and the only possible downfall might be embarrassment, but then again you’re a lecher, so who cares!
Only One Thousand Four Hundred and Eleven left. Approximately one third the population of the school I studied in, it’s sad, extremely sad.
At the turn of the 20th century the world had about a hundred thousand tigers, of which more than half their population came from India. We even have the most gorgeous looking cat in the world, the Royal Bengal Tiger. For over four thousand years from the time of the Indus valley civilization till the time of the Cholas, the tiger has been a symbol of this land, and today our national animal. And we are on a war path to get rid of them as soon as possible.
We should consider ourselves lucky to live amongst such beautiful and graceful creatures, but what do we do, we poach them for their fur, to decorate our homes, to wear it as a sign of class, what class? We are poachers, and that’s all we are. The tigers used to be the best choice for the hunt back in the day, and since the late 90’s some thousand tigers have been poached, someone needs to be blamed, it’s just ourselves we have I guess, but it’s time to act, it’s time to reach out and save these poor cats.
It’s been done before, the government had managed to double the tiger population during Indira Gandhi’s time, and we need to do it again. We have lost more than 1500 of them in the past two decades.
The verdict...... Stop the poaching, stop the hunt...... have a heart, it’s about time we did.
Sweet mother of God!!!! Another wedding, no wait a minute, another 3 more weddings, and the sheer number of weddings this season (between October and February) is simply astounding. Either I know too many people or there is this certain urge for people to get married all of a sudden. This year people of all shapes, sizes, casts and creeds, the young and the old, the rich and the poor, the living and even the dead seem to be getting married. Its fun in its own right, if you come to think of it, but it has its downs also.
Since my return about 5 months ago, I have attended nearly five weddings and ditched about two, I still have around three to four more to go. I’m not cribbing as such, because there were ones I really wanted to be a part of. There are my two first cousins, a friend and my sister, so far two down. But what is it about this season people wonder, why, that at this time of year all these Indians, especially south Indians decide to get married, it is not in the Hindu calendar to get married at this time of year, this quarter (from November to February) consist of the months Karthigai and Margali (these are Tamil months), one the month of lights and illumination and the other the month of prayer, song and worship respectively. There is nothing in there about to or not to get married.
So it’s not a religious thing then. My assumption is that, India has its winter now, and winter is a blessing for a tropical country like this one. We in the coffee belt wait for the rains to start (we call it monsoon), why, you may ask. Because we have eight months of mad heat and we cannot wait for winter to kick in, and winter isn't exactly winter, I mean today is 28 degrees, that’s not that bad. So maybe it’s the climate, it is apt for marriage. Whatever it is, it is quiet hectic but then again, on the flip side it is extremely cheerful, which is a good thing for any season.
But the question here is to be, or not to be married? I’m assuming that either love is in the air or all the folks are on a rampage to get their kids married off. Most of the weddings that I have been to have been love marriages (surprising in this country) and the people who do get married are quiet young these days, people in their early twenties, a little early if you come to think about it. That is the major reason for the old aunts and uncles to come up to me and ask me the same damn question, “so, you’re next, when are you getting married?”, and as much as it annoys me, I like to indulge their little fancy by saying “as soon as you find me a nice girl”, so there are some half a dozen withered old aunt’s probably looking for prospective brides to be, Sweet.
And as to answer the question, the verdict is, To Not be........... Not yet anyways, there is a time and place for everything.
New Years!!! 2010!!! We made it, a new year and a new decade.
First of all, I have to say that the way 2009 ended was unbelievably brilliant, Christmas was perfect and New Years was even better. My friends and I met outside my place early 31st night and left for the Beach House and for those of you who don’t know what the beach house is, let me explain. It is a house by the beach (wasn’t that a puzzle to be solved) it’s far away from civilization, in a remote place near Mahabalipuram (and for those of you who don’t know what that is, it’s a two thousand year old city on the outskirts of Chennai, if you don’t know what that is, you suckers need to be shot). Now the beach house is where we go for the recreational drinking and madness, due to its strategic location, it is ideal for loud parties and crazy behavior. Its distance from the city makes it too far for the cops and too remote for people to be bothered.
By the time it was eleven, I was drowning in a sea for Old Kemp, the latest addition to the “Old” series, a rum so powerful that when I opened the bottle, birds fell dead from an over dose of the strong aroma, there was only one other brave soul who joined me in drinking the Kemp, we never heard from Rohit again. I must admit I have never seen people go through that many bottles of whiskey and rum so casually before. There were quite a few people there that night, many of whom we have not seen or “hung” out with in many years and I must admit, it was really good fun, it seemed like a small St. Michael’s reunion. Some came and left and there were others who couldn't join us due to the foolishness of the Chennai Police Department, we moan for their loss.
I am under the assumption that everyone like me has obviously made some New Year resolutions, now the question is what are they. Is it the usual, “I need to go to the gym”, “I need to become punctual” etc kind of crap or is it new and entertaining, if so... jolt it down in the comments and don’t be shy, I don’t judge*. My resolution on the other hand is to develop a healthy lifestyle* (boring, I know) so as of Saturday the 2nd Jan 2010, I have not had Chocolates, booze or meat, three of the things I love and crave the most, I am the kind of person who lives to eat, so as you can imagine, it’s already starting to kill me inside, slowly but surely I can feel my body weaken from the absence of meat and cacao, to add to this I just found some Ferrero Rochers in the fridge, damn my family and their crappy sense of humour.
I don’t understand how the vegetarians do it, I mean seriously, I have a new found sense of respect for these Brahmins, even more for vegans, no wait that’s not respect, I think that they are plain crazy. My only consolation is that this nonsense diet is for three months only, but then again, it’s for THREE months.
The verdict... to be a damn vegetarian*................. that statement is just wrong.
(* Statutory Warning: All promises and statements made on this blog are fictitious. And objects in the rear view don’t seem to be closer than they are.)
One of my favourite topics of all times this. There are few things on this planet that interests me or entertains me as much as alcohol in all its forms and splendor (this is along with Meat, Chocolate and Women in all their forms and splendor). So, why all the talk about alcohol, you may ask, it’s because New Years is coming in less than a week and tis the season to start stocking up on booze. My good friends Kurien, Sana, Ollie, Siga and Megu have all decided to pick up some smart rum from the land of the Kannadiga’s. You get some brilliant alcohol in that state, that’s why I keep going there once in a while, it’s the kind of place you go to for a weekend of madness, you can’t stay there for a longer period of time as your life may be in danger, we Tamils (meaning me and 2 other jokers) cannot handle the wrath of the good Kannada booze, we usually end up creating a ruckus and disturbing the peace.
As far as the stocking up is concerned, I’m going to go get some four bottles of Royal Stag this afternoon. It’s this brilliant whiskey that’s smooth as silk and at the same time violent as a viper, it doesn't have the basic courtesy to warn us of the dangers of consuming it. It has such a rich and full bodied taste that you don’t realize the number of drinks you've had till it’s too late. A bottle of Old Monk or Old Monster would warn you the second you opened the bottle, the scent of it will hit you so hard that your brain will automatically realize (unconsciously) the dangers of over consumption (3 larges), and why would you want to mess with a bottle named Old Monster in the first place (the first time we challenged an Old Monster was the last time we challenged anything).
I've got to tell the other Chennai based Malayalis and the lone Golti to stock up on the Russian elixir. But there is a surprise for those who come early to the party this year, oh yes, a surprise it is. What else needs to be done? Music and food, the people who are supposed to be in-charge of music are a bunch of lazy arses who, I bet, have even forgotten the fact that they are in-charge of the music, they wanted to have a disco dance off, I want to see how that goes.
Now back to the booze... yes, I need to get in touch with my bootleggers and make it happen. It’s funny that in Madras the bootleggers are cheaper than the regular, good old wine shops. Plus the bootlegged booze won’t hit you on the first drink like all the other tainted local booze that’s got certain additives that acts as a catalyst to getting high and also increases the aroma of the liquor, good if you are on a budget, bad if you have work the next day, good if you are short on time but bad, if you have to get back home and unfortunately you've forgotten the keys. So the verdict now, actually there’s no questioning alcohol, it’s a “in the genes” thing....
Let’s get smashed...
And tis the season to be jolly.... fa la la la la...la la la la..... Yes ladies and gentlemen, Christmas is upon us. Usually the happiest time of the year, other than every payday and that occasional government holiday that pops up without any warning... don’t you just love those... Rain Days during school... Strikes during college (not that we had any)... The boss’ death and even Gandhi’s birthday.... All good!
It’s a nice Christmas this time, got my cousins and niece at home, mum’s in the kitchen making the Christmas snacks (some set Murukku and some Diamond Cuts) and she’s asked me to get her a half of Old Monk to mix in the cake, bless her soul for she understands her family’s ways. The Mossie bai is going to deliver the Biriyani tomorrow for lunch, sometimes I feel that is why they were put on this blessed Earth, to feed all us fat SOB’s.
Damn... I haven’t gone shopping yet. No clothes or anything of that sort, and no gifts for most people, got to get me folks something though and my niece wants me to buy her a Barbie doll, and I just found out that one of these damn dolls costs around 1000 bucks. How is it that a plastic doll that doesn’t do anything and that’s probably made in China cost so much, Madness isn’t it? I remember the good old days when my GI Joes and He-Man figurines used to cost around 40 to about 100 rupees, I had like a million of them, wonder where they all went....
I’m going to make the brandy fondue for dessert, a round of Rummy and bottle of Johnny mixed with all that Rum cake and Chocolates and we’ll all be going Ho! Ho! Ho! by the end of the night. The only annoying part is waking up early on a Friday to go to Church, not that I don’t enjoy Church (especially on Christmas and Harvest) it’s just that it’s too early in the morning. It’s the one time of year you can see everyone that happy there, the usual Church gossip, Politics and commotion will be replaced by loud and happy people exchanging Christmas wishes and pleasantries about how each other’s clothes look and how happy they are to see each other, and for me it is usually a remark about how long it has been since they’ve seen me in Church.
But all in all a really good time it is and it’s going to be. So the verdict is as simple as the pie that we aren’t making...
To be as Merry as Santa Clause on shrooms...
My friends would say that I am a jackass of various sorts, I disagree... I am what you would call a loving and considerate lad... witty and wise... the problem comes up when I say the truth. Like Gandhi, I believe in saying the truth, only the truth and nothing but the truth, so help me God... what people need to understand is that the truth hurts, stings even...
For example nobody wants to know their actual weight, and nobody wants to reveal their true age...society forces various stereotypes upon us. We need to walk and talk in a certain manner; we need to be tall, dark and handsome...or the fairer sex has to measure 36-24-36.... "If you are slim, trim and healthy, people will like you” they say.... I say all balls. I’m 5'10", 78 kgs and have a face the size of a small car with hair that acts as a naturally occurring helmet, and the truth is the people who despise me will keep despising me for life and I can’t help it. It’s not that they don’t like me because of my appearance, it’s because I’m honest, I call the things the way I see them, no sugar coating or sweet talking, no.... none of that. I don’t see why people need to kiss the arse of someone else just to get them to like you... ridiculous.
So, should I try to get everyone to like me by becoming the "gentleman stud", or can I ignore the society I live in and go about living my fat and comfortable life?... The Verdict... I'll leave the choice to you nice, sweet, considerate and beautiful people.......Psych!!!.... You suckers haven’t learnt anything yet...The verdict is quiet simple...
To Be.....
